Meet our Artist
We have collaborated with local Glasgow based artist Marcus Marritt to create immersive illustrations. Scenes created could be a memory, an ambition, allowing your imagination to take over. The full launch took place earlier this month at the Kendal Mountain festival where all
“Working with Vango affords me an opportunity to work close to my passion for climbing, and a chance to tighten my approach, developing an art direction more grounded in texture, with softer approaches to light in creating depth”
We interviewed Marcus to find out more about how he creates his artwork and what inspires him
Was there a pivotal moment when you decided to be an artist?
I would say no, it has more been a case of learning from the industry I was working in and this is how my own niche developed.
Why do you love what you do?
That is a big question to answer. Let's say that the ability to produce visual work for a living is very satisfying
Can you tell us about the process of making your work?
With work produced for a client like Vango, the initial step is to have the art director on the brief to approve your concept, so you present a line drawing (often with more detail than others) for them to say ‘yes great, please move on’ – which is when you then move on to the final art stage, which is creating the final colour visual. I find it very important to be producing personal work outside of client briefs
What piece of your artwork would you like to be remembered for?
I would say I haven’t produced this yet - though I would say the Rucksacks illustration from the new Vango campaign is a recent favourite …
Do you have a favourite photograph or artist, which inspires you?
Rather than say, one individual, I would say keep a very open eye at all times – I get ideas for work from looking at / listening to everything
What is your greatest indulgence in life?
Popcorn. Salted popcorn. If a pack comes near me it will be finished
Which artist of the past would you most like to meet?
Alfred Hitchcock. I’m a big fan of everything he did – plus what an interesting man
What advice would you give to a young artist following in your steps?
Find your own angle. Be happy
A huge thank you to Marcus for his work and to the team at Made Brave who have helped us create this new campaign. For Wherever you go.
