Both have their plus points and unique characteristics - here’s our quick guide to help you choose the one that’s right for you. Down is the warmest insulation available in the sleeping bag market with exceptionally small pack sizes making it ideal for cold, dry conditions particularly if pack size is paramount. It is however harder to maintain than synthetic in that it should be stored un-compressed, washed in a specific way and loses a huge amount of its thermal capacity when it becomes wet. Synthetic however continues to perform when damp or wet and is generally lower priced than down while many still provide great warmth to weight ratios and can be cleaned easily at home. Although there is significant advances in synthetic technology there is nothing currently that truly compares to the pack size and warmth to weight ratio that can be found in down.
