Highly recommended

I'm very pleased with the Centara 800. We bought this a few weeks ago for a festival. It was pouring with rain when we put it up for the first time (not counting a quick check that the beams inflated in the garden before we went). I was impressed how quickly it went up - a lot faster than the Vango Tigris 600 we had borrowed last year. A little rain came in through the door while we were pitching, and there was a small puddle on the floor, but apart from that it stayed dry inside. We bought the footprint too, which was a useful aid to pitching, as well as keeping the groundsheet protected. It took about 30 seconds to inflate each beam, with a helper initially guiding each beam to the right shape. The pump very clearly showed the correct inflation pressure. Once the downpour had ended, we ent round and repositioned the beams a little - next time I would be more careful to take one of the central beams as a starting point and then square/straighten the panel to the next beam before pegging out. Overall though it was remarkably easy for a tent of its size. The door canopy attached very quickly, with sockets to slot the poles into.

There was a massive amount of room inside for a family of 4 - the great advantage of the design was having separate space for the children, which meant that they didn't wake each other or us up in the small hours. Ventilation was good, with vents at each end, and spacers to push side vents into the open position. There were all sorts of neat touches inside, with pockets, loops etc for tidying stuff.

Striking the tent was very easy, once I had realised that you use the oval indent in the top of the valve cover to turn the white button inside the valve through 90 degrees to the open position. When you do that, the valve stays open and you can squeeze the air out very quickly. Our neighbours at the campsite were impressed how quickly it came down. Packing was surprisingly easy - we sat there thinking that the tent would never go in, but in fact it went into its bag on the first attempt.

Perhaps the strongest endorsement came from my wife, who had been sceptical when she first saw the size of the tent in the garden, but was converted and is now looking forward to a camping weekend fairly soon. And I had my best ever night's sleep in a tent, having camped on and off for 30 years.

Overall lots of pros - I would definitely recommend this tent.

The only notable con is the weight - it weighs 22kg or so. I bought a Shakespeare fishing seatbox trolley to get it from the car to the pitch, and was very pleased that I had done so - I wouldn't want to have to carry it very far at all. But the weight reflects its size, and in fact it's a little lighter (although bulkier) than the slightly smaller poled tent that we borrowed last year.

Excellent basics, but lacking attention to detail

I both love this tent and am a bit disappointed by it.

The fundamentals are excellent. It's big, sturdy and very easy to put up - less than ten minutes with the hand pump. It handles moderate winds without any fuss, so will almost certainly handle much stronger. The materials seem to be good quality, but time will tell.

The irritations are in the details. There are very few storage pockets compared to rivals. Insect mesh is only on one door. The room dividers (to divide each 4-man end into 2x2) toggle on rather than zip, so it's a visual barrier, not actually a divider. There aren't quite enough pegs supplied for every guy rope (although there are loads of guy ropes). Ventilation is not great either, with small vents under each window and at each end.

Also, I do think the awning would be handy, but that's another Ā£250 - a whole extra tent!!

I would recommend this tent as a large, easy to erect vis-a-vis, but Vango could easily make it perfect.
